Q: What, exactly, is chalk based paint and why should I use it?

A: Chalk based paints have been around for a very long time, but were made popular a few years ago when Annie Sloan introduced her Chalk Paint to America. Chalk based paints use chalk, clay, and other minerals as a binder instead of latex or acrylic.  The binder is what sticks to the surface when the paint dries.  Minerals are the ideal ingredient for painting furniture as they stick to nearly any surface, require little or no surface prep, and are easy to distress to achieve today's popular Shabby Chic look.  In their purest form, they are completely safe and eco-friendly, meaning you can safely clean paint brushes and paint containers in your sink, or dispose of them without the need for special handling. Of course, we always recommend recycling your empty cans and sample pots.

Q: What are the differences between the multitude of brands of chalk based paint on the market?

A: There are several different brands using several different formulas for their paint. Some use synthetic additives, or are based on latex paint with a mineral additive.  What sets Debi's DIY Paints apart is that they are truly all natural, with no synthetic additives or chemical solvents. They are safe to use indoors because they contain no VOC's and have little or no odor. Also, check the label for an ingredients list. If they don't list their ingredients, they may not want you to know what's in it!

Q: What is wax and why should I use it to finish my piece?

A: Wax is a finish that you will find on most of the furniture that you purchase in stores today.  It is relatively durable, easy to maintain, and can be tinted for aging or using other effects.  It also gives a custom, hand rubbed look as it absorbs into the paint.  If you are looking for a more durable finish, Big Top can be used to protect pieces that will be under heavier day to day use.

Q: What exactly is Milk Paint?

A: Milk Paint is a powdered paint that can be mixed to different consistencies based on how you'd like to use it.  It can be mixed thin to make a color wash or thick to make a textured paint.  It reacts to finished surfaces differently than chalk-based paints, but can result in some truly unique finishes.  It is also know for giving that authentic old chippy look that is difficult to achieve with other types of paint.  Come by Redoux in Mandeville and we'd be happy to show you some possibilities!

Currently, our shopping cart system accepts Paypal and Square for payment.  You can use your Paypal account, or you can pay with a credit card via Paypal or Square.  We are also able to accept credit cards by phone, using our Paypal Here or Square phone app, if you are more comfortable with that option.  You can call our retail store at 985-674-8811 and ask for Mike.

Shipping and backorders

We will ship most orders the next business day after receiving payment.  We make every attempt to ensure our stock levels are accurately reflected on our online store, but if an item is out of stock we will contact you for further instructions before shipping the rest of your order.

We use USPS Priority Mail and FedEx Ground to ship all paints, waxes, and finishes above one or two samples.  Smaller orders will ship via USPS First-Class Mail.  Waxes considered hazardous will be shipped by USPS Parcel Select Ground for safety reasons.

We offer low-cost flat-rate shipping calculated by order weight  for U.S. domestic shipments:

  • Shipping charges range from $4.99 - $49.99

Winter Shipping is also available.  If you live in an area that is expected to be below freezing temperatures upon delivery of your paint (or along the route of your paint from down here in the never-frozen-south), I strongly suggest choosing the Winter Shipping option.  These shipments include insulation and heat pack(s) in the box to protect your paint from freezing.  DIY paint is NOT freeze resistant, and freezing can damage the paint to the point of being unusable.  Winter Shipping adds $3 - $5 per shipment, depending on the size of the order.

Please contact us for international shipping quotes.

Sales Tax

We do not charge sales tax for orders shipped outside the state of Louisiana.  Louisiana residents will pay 4.7% state sales tax.  If you would like to pick up your order at our Mandeville store, please use our contact form to let us know, so we will not ship it to you.  All shipping charges will be refunded through Paypal or your credit card upon pickup.

Returns & Refunds

We cannot accept returns for paint or wax products, unless the product was shipped in error and we are notified within 7 days of receiving your shipment.

Paint colors cannot be exactly reproduced in digital pictures, so please be sure that the colors you choose will work for your project.  If you are unsure please contact us and we will work with you to choose the best color, or point you to some online images of projects that used the color you are considering.

Dry items, such as paint brushes, buffing brushes or sanding pads may be returned unopened and unused.  Return shipping is the responsibility of the customer.  Please email or call us first so we know to expect your product and how it is being shipped.  We will issue an RMA number for you to include with your package.

Shipments that are refused or returned to sender will be automatically refunded minus any chipping charges.  We are not able to refund shipping charges.

How Do I Place an Order?
